RIBA President Stats

A few years back, I worked in the research department of the RIBA. One thing I always meant to do but never got round to was to do was find out a bit more on the past presidents of RIBA to see what facts I could find out about them.

Here’s the beginnings of what I’ve found. I’ll add to this as I get more data.

Things I Found Out

• There have been 71 presidents over a 182 year period.
• The majority of Presidents have been male (68 male Presidents), with only 3 female Presidents.
• All 3 female Presidents have served recently, in the last 10 years.
• 3 people have served more than once:
  • Owen Luder
  • William Tite
  • Sir Percy Edward Thomas
• The longest serving President was the inaugural President, Thomas Philip Earl de Grey who server for 24 years.
• 9 presidents have served 3 year terms.
• The majority, 59 Presidents, have server 2 year terms.
• 3 Presidents served a 1 year term.
• One President, George Edmund Street died in office, serving less than 1 year.
• 3 generations of Waterhouse’s served as President: Alfred Waterhouse, his son Paul Waterhouse and his grandson Michael Waterhouse.
• 2 generations of Scott’s served:  George Gilbert Scott and his grandson Giles Gilbert Scott.
